THE SHOCKING WORLD OF THE WHITE RIBBON
December 2009
The subtitle to my essay on The White Ribbon is 'Where does it come from? Where is it going?' The film I argue has deep roots in European arthouse cinema, which is where it comes from, and to indicate where it is going, I propose that its intent is to shock in the surrealist manner, which is why it comes as no surprise that Jean-Claude Carriere, Bunuel's collaborator from the 1960s and 70s, was involved as 'script consultant'. Has he spiced up an already spicy script?
